Re:  Campus Water Supply Update

Here is an update on the campus water supply interruption:

  • Water has been restored to the Howe Center
  • Low water pressure continues in Residence Halls with the exception of CPA and River Terrace
  • Low water pressure continues in the Library, Schaefer, and Walker
  • Roadway water flow continues in the Howe Center area, Stanley Drive, and 8th Street
  • Lower campus (south of the Gate House) has not been effected

Also:

  • Stay clear of areas that are taped off
  • Use caution on wet streets and sidewalks
  • Avoid driving in the Howe Center area

The source of the continuing problem is a broken pipe located under the Howe Center Circle.   On Saturday, December 15, that repair will take place.    The excavation will begin at 7am, and around 10am water service to Jacobus, Hayden, and Davis Halls will be shut down.   All other buildings will have water service as described above.  The project will be completed by 6pm.      Once the repairs are made, the water supply and pressure should return to normal.

Thank you for your patience.   If you have any safety concerns contact Campus Police at 201,216.5105.

Re:       Campus Water Supply

The campus continues to be impacted by underground water supply problems in the vicinity of the Howe Center and CPA. As we begin operations on Friday the following conditions are expected:

  • No water available in the Howe Center
  • Low water pressure in most Residence Halls
  • Roadway water flow in the Howe Center area, Stanley Drive, and 8th Street
  • Food options may be limited in the Pierce Dining Room
  • Those with offices or activities in the Howe Center will need to use restrooms in other buildings
  • Lower campus appears not to be affected

Also:

  • Stay clear of areas that are taped off
  • Use caution on wet streets and sidewalks
  • Avoid driving in the Howe Center area

Physical Plant staff and contractors have been working through the overnight to locate and resolve the problems and will continue those efforts on Friday. We’ll provide updates to the Stevens community until water service is fully restored.

Overall, our plan is to conduct university operations as normal as possible.   Thank you for your patience.   If you have any safety concerns contact Campus Police at 201,216.5105.

Re:  Storm Recovery – Final Update

This will be the final storm recovery update.   With the resumption of classes on Wednesday, November 7, Stevens will return to normal operations.  This morning we learned that power has been restored to 406 Jefferson.  With that good news, power has been restored to all Stevens leased housing facilities.

The storm recovery link on the Stevens home page will be moved on Wednesday to the “News” section under “Announcements”.

We would like to express our gratitude again to all the members of the Stevens Emergency Management Team, and to all other staff that supported the EMT, for their absolute and total dedication and extraordinary efforts during the past 10 days.  Paramount in their plans and actions was the safety and well-being of our students.   In this regard, they earned the highest marks and the appreciation of the entire Stevens community.

A special thanks to our students who demonstrated extraordinary character during Superstorm Sandy.  They were responsive, collaborative and upbeat. Our student volunteer activities in Hoboken had tremendous impact on the community.   We would like to thank parents and families for their patience and cooperation.

Stevens returns to normal operations with the understanding that many in our region and some of our families continue to face hardships.  As time permits, members of the Stevens community will continue to volunteer in Hoboken and we are prepared to assist individual students who face storm related difficulties.

Re: Revised Academic Calendar

Dear Colleagues and Stevens Students:

I hope all of you are safe and coping well with the aftermath of this storm.  In order to ensure business continuity and timely completion of the Fall 2012 semester, we have revised the academic calendar. This revised academic calendar applies to both undergraduate and graduate courses that are on a semester schedule, including webcampus courses.

There will be no examinations or quizzes administered from Wednesday, November 7th through Friday, November 9th and student absences will not require a dean's note this week.

All missed instructional days will be made up and all course learning outcomes will be met.  The semester, originally ending on Friday, December 7th is extended to Tuesday, December 18th thus making up the seven missed days of classes (Monday-Friday, October 29th – November 2nd and Monday-Tuesday, November 5th-6th).

Faculty should promptly revise their course syllabus with respect to deliverables and course requirements for the rest of the Fall Semester and communicate it to the students.

There will be no scheduled Final Examination period.  The decision as to whether or not it is necessary to administer an in-class final exam is at the discretion of each instructor.  Instructors who feel that alternative methods (such as take-home exams) can be effectively used to assess student learning are encouraged to pursue them.

If an in-class final exam is to be given, the instructor must notify the registrar’s office (Annette.Feliciano@stevens.edu) no later than November 12, 2012, with the desired time slot(s) and date(s).  The registrar will make sure that potential conflicts and overloads are managed appropriately and, in collaboration with the faculty, will develop a final exam schedule for distribution to the students by November 19, 2012. If an in-class final is to be given, the Honor Board seating requirements are waived. Seating charts are strongly encouraged.

Final grades are due by 5PM on December 21st (the usual 72 hours after the last exam).

Your cooperation in completing this semester as smoothly as possible and giving due consideration to the hardships that this storm has brought upon every member of our community is greatly appreciated.

The Stevens administration and the Emergency Management Team has postponed the resumption of classes until Wednesday, November 7.   Offices will reopen on Monday, November, 5.

This decision will allow additional time for infrastructure recovery in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.   We have considered the concerns expressed by some students, parents, and other members of the Stevens community in making this change.

We will continue to keep the community informed as Stevens moves towards the full resumption of operations.

Letter from President Farvardin

Dear Members of the Stevens Community,

You have been receiving regular updates from the Emergency Management Team throughout our storm preparations and now, during the aftermath of this devastating hurricane.

I am writing first, to assure you that all members of the community, both those on campus and those who are in off-campus housing, are safe.  We are in constant communication with students both on and off-campus, and are providing them with regular updates about safety, status of operations, meals, and information from the City of Hoboken.

Our primary goal during this period and the near future continues to be ensuring the safety of all members of the Community.

The Stevens campus continues to experience some severe challenges, most significantly, a power outage in most buildings on campus, including residence halls.

After much deliberation, we have decided to cancel classes through Saturday, Nov. 3rd.  We will determine the status of office closings on a day-to-day basis.

I want to take this opportunity to commend all members of the Stevens community for their good judgment, hard work and cooperation during the last 48 hours.  Although Hoboken and Stevens were in a very vulnerable position during the hurricane event, we were very fortunate not to have any injuries or human impact.

I also want to take this time to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the Emergency Management Team and those members of campus community who have led our campus efforts to anticipate, plan, and implement our emergency response and keep our community safe, fed, and in communication with each other.

Students, faculty, and staff who are in close proximity to campus are invited to attend a Stevens community meeting at 2pm today in the DeBaun Auditorium.

We hope to be back to normal operations very soon.  In the meantime, continue to use good judgment and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Nariman Farvardin

President

Re: Storm Safety Instructions

The approaching storm promises to test our emergency response here on campus. The good news is that we have the right team in place to handle whatever comes our way, but we need to work together and BE SMART!

This storm is a serious one and it's no time to test Mother Nature's capabilities. It is a time that we must act responsibly and not do anything that would cause an unnecessary or avoidable emergency response by police, fire and EMS first responders.

Below are some safety tips for before, during and after this major storm. Please read them carefully.

Before the storm:
- Make sure your windows are closed and locked and draw the blinds closed. All roof top entries must be sealed and locked.
- Charge your cell phone and pay attention to emergency text messages.
- Get a flashlight with fresh batteries and DON'T USE CANDLES!
- Sign up for the Stevens Emergency Campus Alert through your myStevens page.
- Program the Campus Police emergency number into your cell phone: 201-216-3911

During the storm:
Howling winds and driving rain can make riding out a storm a scary ordeal. Follow these tips for staying safe in your dorm room, apartment or Greek house:
- Stay inside and away from windows, skylights and glass doors.
- If you lose power, turn off major appliances such as the air conditioner and other large items to reduce damage.
- Take extra care to prevent careless cooking incidents.
- Report all damage or medical emergencies immediately.
- Do not go outside during the intense portions of the storm.
- Do not venture anywhere near the Hudson River.

After the storm:
Typically, more injuries and deaths occur after a severe storm than during. These unfortunate incidents occur when people go outside to survey damage and come into contact with downed power lines or are struck by falling tree limbs. Follow these suggestions for staying safe:
- Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires of any kind under any circumstances. Stay away from puddles with wires in/near them. Do not touch trees or other objects that are in contact with power lines.
- Call campus police immediately to report hazards such as downed power lines, broken gas or water mains, overturned gas tanks, etc.
- Watch for weakened roads, bridges, tree limbs or porches that could collapse unexpectedly.
- If reinstalling a satellite antenna, check in all directions to be sure no power lines are nearby. The same goes for climbing trees to clear debris.
- Do not operate charcoal grills, propane camping stoves or generators indoors.

Please do not hesitate to call Campus Police if you require assistance. Obey all instructions by police officers and university officials as well as your RAs.

Thank you and be safe.
