ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE

It is vital for students at a research-oriented institution such as Stevens to be able to read and write English effectively for research papers and thesis dissertations, and also to be able to communicate and express themselves fluently in English. To assist graduate students in these areas, the ISSS office administers the Stevens' English as a Second Language Program (ESL). All international graduate students (in F-1 and J-1 status) must have their English language proficiency evaluated upon arrival. Students who demonstrate a need for improvement in one or more aspects of their English proficiency are required to enroll in one of four levels of English classes. The courses are designed to aid the student in the development of particular language skills.

All international graduate students who have taken at least one graduate Developmental English course while at Stevens and who wish to continue to improve their English language skills are eligible to receive a 50% discount in course tuition for an additional Developmental English course. This offer applies to students who have been enrolled in DE10, DE80, or DE81. As English language proficiency is important to both academic and professional success, eligible students are encouraged to consider this opportunity seriously.

Our dedicated staff is available to assist proposal writing, thesis structure and all other academic communication endeavors students need assistant with. In addition, the ISSS office offers opportunities with discussions groups on everyday communication issues. topics includes Relational communication, effective employment communication and a host of other specific communicational challenges that students deem necessary to discus. If you are interested or have further questions, please contact Sophie Hales, ESL Coordinator, at 201-216-5370 or by e-mail: shales@stevens.edu.
