A distinguished
alumni couple from the Class of 1983 have been chosen to serve as
the new chairs of the Edwin A. Stevens Society.
Kevin and
Virginia Ruesterholz, longstanding members of the EAS Society
President’s Circle, will lend their experience, expertise and
leadership over the next two years to steward the Society—a network
of industry leaders, inventors, business professionals,
entrepreneurs and educators who make annual contributions in excess
of $1,000 to Stevens.
“Stevens
is extremely fortunate to have such a generous and committed couple
serving as chairs of this prestigious giving society,” said Stevens
President Harold J. Raveche.
“With their
remarkable achievements, Virginia and Kevin reflect the highest
quality of our alumni today. We look forward to what we know will be
their outstanding leadership for the EAS Society.”
Together,
the couple have ample experience coordinating corporate alumni
giving campaigns. They have also helped to develop corporate
internship positions for students studying business management, and
they have each volunteered to give lectures in Stevens classes.
Virginia is also a board member of the Business and Technology
program, a
unique new program
at Stevens that offers an undergraduate degree in technology
management.
“We’re
very excited,” said Kevin Ruesterholz. “It’s an opportunity to give
back to Stevens what it gave to us. Stevens has been a big part of
our lives—we went to school there, met and got married. Now we have
a great opportunity to return the favor and help to advance the
Institute.”
“We’re
excited,” Virginia agreed, “especially to be a part of the great
things that EAS has done over the past 20 years. We just hope to
continue that.”
Among the
plans for the coming year is the Society’s annual Spring Luncheon,
which will be held on May 8, 2004, at the campus’s new Lawrence T.
Babbio, Jr. Center for Technology Management—an event which, in
part, will celebrate the successful completion of the Institute’s
most recent capital campaign, the $102 million
Campaign for Stevens.
Also on
the horizon is the reestablishment of the EAS Committee, a group of
volunteers dedicated to the advancement of the Society, and the
implementation of several new fund-raising strategies.
Kevin
Ruesterholz is the technical manager of Lucent Technologies’ Next
Generation Network Laboratory, which is responsible for the
demonstration and interoperability testing of multi-vendor voice,
data and wireless networks. Located in Holmdel, N.J., and one of the
largest labs at Lucent, the facility evaluates equipment—including
switches, routers and network management software—for all of the
business units of Lucent and ensures that they work together
properly before they are deployed at Lucent client sites.
As
technical manager, Kevin is responsible for the technical marketing,
development and certification testing of Lucent’s network management
software products. Prior to his current assignment, Kevin held
various management positions at Lucent, working closely with key
customers in international product management, and in strategic
alliances and business development to expand Lucent’s portfolio of
clients.
While
attending Stevens, Kevin served as business editor of The Link
yearbook and was a member of the American Institute of Chemical
Engineers, the ski club and the Rifle Team.
Both Kevin
and Virginia received bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering
from Stevens in 1983. Kevin went on to receive an MBA in finance
from Rutgers University in 1989. Virginia received a master’s in
telecommunications management from Brooklyn Polytechnic University
in 1988.
Virginia
is president of Wholesale Markets for Verizon. This business unit is
responsible for serving telecommunication carriers that utilize
Verizon’s domestic and international voice and data network. In this
position, she is responsible for all sales, marketing, provisioning
and maintenance operations. During her career with Verizon, Virginia
has held numerous senior leadership positions, including
responsibility for running Verizon’s telecommunications network for
Manhattan and providing data services for Verizon’s largest
customers on the East Coast.
Virginia
has received several awards, including Crain’s New York Business
“40 under 40” award and the Rising Star Award of New York
Women’s Agenda. When receiving the Stevens Honor Award in 1995, she
was praised as a business leader and a mentor to young women
executives.
While at
Stevens, Virginia served as president of the campus chapter of the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers and vice president of the
Society of Women Engineers; she also served on Student Council and
in the Women in Engineering Network.
The couple
reside in Holmdel, N.J., with their two children, Scott and Katie.
